Autumn vase

I usually wait until voting time to post my monthly PCAGOE challenge entry, but I couldn't wait! This is an upcycled glass vase. It was a gift from a friend a few years ago, and used to be filled with liquid scented something-or-other. I washed it out, although it still has a hint of the marvelous scent - I'm not sure what to call it; it's sort of rain-ish, outdoorsy with a hint of floral whatnot. I wish I had kept the original information, because the fragrance is fabulous. Anyway... the leaves are made by using rubber stamps on sheets of polymer clay in hand-mixed colors.

Stay tuned for the November challenge voting - it will be at PCAGOE from November 1 to 3. For a sneak peek at the challenge entries, you can visit our flickr group any time. We've got some beautiful entries already for this month!

Jars for treasures

I've been keeping a little six-jar wooden spice rack around forever. Every time I sort through my supplies and materials (which is more often than you might think) and throw away stuff I will never use, I keep these little glass jars because they are so cute. It's one of those I'll eventually use this for something items, for sure. I finally covered two of the jars with the same canework I'm using for my High Priestess tarot art. The lids are made by slicing the puffed-out, distorted ends of the cane off before it got reduced too much, and the bottles themselves are covered carefully by laying on one slice of canework at a time and rolling smooth. It's hard to tell in the photos, but there's some glitter and metallic clay in the cane, so these have a great shimmer.

These could be used to hold art supplies, make-up, spices, salt and pepper, fairy dust, secret messages...

workshop fun

This weekend's DivaDea polymer clay workshop was at St. John's Coffee Cafe in Camp Hill, PA. We made bud vases.

We started out by making canes - a spiral (or jellyroll) and/or a lacework cane. Both are fairly simple canework processes. While our canes "chilled out" we sculpted vessels out of "junk clay" (the ends and mess-ups and extra clay that I accumulate as I work). Then we sliced the canes and applied the slices carefully to our vessels.

The finished products got taken home by the students for baking.

This bud vase turned out great. The back is flat, so magnets can be added and it can hang on the fridge.

This student opted for a stand-alone pot instead of a hanging bud vase. I love the way she placed her lace canework to make the vessel look a bit like stone walls.
